Located on Baja California Sur’s east coast is the city of Loreto which is considered one of the state’s oldest settlements. The area, founded in 1697 by Father Juan Maria Salvatierra as Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto is now a water-sports Mecca and world renowned location offering world-class fishing, kayaking, snorkeling and diving, visitors year-round flock to this area in search of water sport action and fun. When the Spanish King Carlos III expelled the Society of Jesus from all Spanish territory in 1767, 25 Jesuit missions in the southern part of the peninsula were run by Dominicans and Franciscans. Ruins of these missions some of recently restored, can still be viewed in San Javier, San Luis Gonzaga and Santa Rosalía de Mulegé areas.
